Mapping My Digital Space

In an era where we are always on our phones and we worried we were spending too much time online already,  the pandemic happened and our lives became for the most part 100 percent digital. There are always pros and cons to every new app and there are people who will love it and people who will hate it, it's part of the tech world. Creating a digital map really puts into perspective the applications we are constantly using and the reason why we use those apps. There used to be a time I was using every social media application for a small cafe I used to own. During this time I realized that many apps are really good for businesses as they cost virtually nothing to advertise. What it did cost me was time, so much time.As a small business owner we do everything ourselves including social media management. During this time I learned to use apps to generate income instead of using them for personal use. When I sold the business I realized I hardly use those apps for my personal life. I used facebook, instagram, snapchat, yelp, google, ubereats, twitter even tinder to promote my business.

Professionally I use various apps specially with remote learning. I am constantly learning new applications. Today alone I learned about a remote background app to help with bitmoji classrooms. Not only do I teach special education at the elementary level but I also teach at the college level so there are different programs I need to use for that like gotomeeting which is a version of zoom. Throughout the day I am constantly checking 5 different emails for the jobs that I have. Even though I have all my emails forwarded to my yahoo mail (yes yahoo!) which I’ve had for 22 years but when I need to reply I need to switch to that specific email address.  But most of the apps I use are from google suites as everything is there and you can never forget to save  and it's always in your drive.

I find myself spending my free time on Netflix the most. I hardly use facebook but I do go on Instagram a few times at night just to see what is trending or to get ideas such as nail designs or spots to visit during a vacation. I spend the majority of my day on snapchat because me and my sisters have a group chat that we are constantly communicating with each other. I would consider most of my online presence as a Visitor as I am there for personal gain not to communicate with anybody or have any interactions with anybody besides snapchat. I can easily spend over 5 hours a day watching Netflix and consider finishing a series an accomplishment which is not a good thing. When it comes to Netflix I consider the app a stress reliever because I am able to get “away” from life and chaos, it's almost like reading a good book. I have been watching Greys Anatomy which has 16 episodes with each season having 24 episodes. In just 6 weeks I am on season 14. This gives you an example of how much time I spend on this app.
